Principal's Message

Dear BVCS School Families (teachers, students, staff and guardians),

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! As your principal, I am excited to break the good news to you that starting from August 27, 2021, Bay Valley Chinese School (BVCS) will resume to in-person instruction on the Charlotte Wood Middle School (CWMS) campus.

Looking back to 2020-21
Last academic year was nothing short of a bittersweet experience in the virtual classroom. Against all odds, our resilient students and teachers attended classes online every Friday at seven o'clock sharp. Despite the COVID-19, our students' education was not disrupted, and fun learning was not overlooked. Our creative administrative staff successfully cheered up students and enriched their learning experience through a multitude of events, such as cultural seminars, e-Halloween costume contest, pencil calligraphy contest, poetry read-aloud contest and e-Chinese New Year celebration. Furthermore, our school reached out and engaged in local community events, participating in the San Ramon City's Virtual Culture in the Community, Auction at the Danville Museum, and teacher seminars at the Association of Northern California Chinese Schools. The lack of a campus facility did not deter us from meeting in person. Drive-thru car parades were organized on the first day of school and at the end of the school year. Memorable moments were captured in video and photos, accessible on our school website and Facebook.

Resuming in-person instruction
Studies find that online class structure along with the lack of social interaction in person could affect young students adversely, including but not limited to decreased engagement, learning loss and heightened anxiety. Virtual fatigue and depression were not only suffered by many students but also teachers as well, who were overwhelmed and exhausted by the extra hours and efforts they had to put into class preparation. School reopening has been advocated as good for students' mental health. San Ramon Valley Unified School District's gearing up to full-time in-person classes in the fall is like rain in a drought, drenching students and parents with a soaking joy.

Staying informed of the pandemic development
As our teachers and staff are preparing to meet with you on the CWMS campus, we must take into consideration that many of our young BVCS students are not eligible to get the Covid-19 vaccine. In order to prevent the spread of coronavirus, BVCS is requesting everyone to wear mask and maintain social distancing on campus. The Delta variant of Covid-19 that caused the recent surges in break-through infection is an indication of the unpredictable nature of this pandemic. It is too early to tell what kind of measures the Contra Costa Health Service would roll out in response to a persistent rise in hospitalization. Yet, it is not all impossible that a more restrictive health order might affect SRVSD's facility rental policy. Please cooperate with BVCS' public health safety policies and follow closely our eNews and emails.

BVCS' back to school protocol
The 2021-22 school year starts on August 13 when a welcome-back drive through car parade will await you at the Sycamore Park and Ride Lot in Danville. The first day of in-person instruction begins on August 27. Classes start at seven o'clock on CWMS campus. Important links posted at the bottom of this eNews will help you find which class students are assigned to, where the classroom is on the campus map, and what events are lined up in the calendar. Please come to school early to familiarize yourself with the campus facility. Parents and caregivers should leave the campus as soon as the bell rings. Classes will be dismissed at 8:50 pm. Teachers will take turn to bring their students to the entrance for pick up. There will be a designated seating arrangement for students inside the classroom. Teachers and students are to always remain masked. Cleaning and sanitizing products are provided at the campus entrance as well as inside each classroom.

BVCS' 20 years in the making
This year marks the 20th anniversary of Bay Valley Chinese school. Since the fall of 2002, our school has been continuously offering Chinese education program on the CWMS campus and proactively partaking in the local community events. "Inheriting the past and pioneering the future" is our motto in establishing the mission to promote the lifelong appreciation of Chinese language and culture. BVCS is very blessed to have the support of devoted parents, teachers and volunteers all these years. A series of celebratory activities are underway. Looking forward to your participation. Let's join hands to nurture this paradise that is built for Chinese learning.

Wish you all another great year at BVCS!

Sincerely,
Kay Wang
BVCS Principal
