While others might celebrate the Lunar New Year with the traditional fireworks and light show, Bay Valley Chinese School welcomed in the Year of the Pig with a novice element, a heavy metal pre-show piece "Gong-xi Gong-xi Happy New Year" by the rock and roll Livorna Band. Adding to the dynamics of the gala was the opening act of Kungfu Dragon USA's lion and dragon dances. Their vigorous martial art performance and Xiaopei Chinese Dance's jubilant Dai Ethnic Dance further took our program up a notch.

Students of Bay Valley Chinese School showcased their Chinese language skills and their knowledge of traditional Lunar New Year stories through a range of modern and classic songs and dances, traditional puppet show as well as Chinese vocabulary composition demonstration. The production that our diligent team of teachers, students, teaching assistants and parent volunteers brought to our audience was both entertaining and auspicious. It was a full house, filled with energetic spectators and local dignitaries. Not only did our program receive a round of applause from the audience, but also earned compliments from community leaders for our efforts to share our culture.

One of the most recognized Lunar New Year traditions was to give out red envelopes (hongbao). Having our honorable guests hand out red envelopes has become part of our ritual. This year, we were privileged to have the help from Danville Mayor Robert Storer, Vice Mayor Karen Stepper, Council Member Newell Arnerich, Charlotte Wood Middle School Principal Bridget Vorhees, President of the Board of San Ramon Valley Unified School District (SRVUSD) Rachel Hurd, SRVUSD board members Ken Mintz and Susanna Ordway, President of the Board of San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District Dominique Yancey, Director of the Culture Center of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in San Francisco Roy Yen, Vice President of Contra Costa Community College District Governing Board Andy Li, as well as President and Vice President of the Association of Northern California Chinese Schools James Hsi and Sandra Su. The gala was heartwarming with the Lunar New Year customs passing down from one generation to another. The party ended in the midst of joy and laughter.

With tons of gratitude and appreciation, Bay Valley Chinese School would like to thank each and every teacher, student, teaching assistant, parent-volunteer, and administration staff. Without your support, the success of our 17th Annual Chinese New Year Celebration would not have been made possible.

May the Year of the Pig bring all of you good fortune and wish you every success in the year to come!

Message from SRVUSD Board:
You may have heard that San Ramon Valley Unified School District is going to change the way that people vote at future elections for the school board, from at-large to by-trustee elections. This new election method will greatly impact the way voters and especially parents of students in the SRVUSD will vote or participate in future elections. The School District has been notifying parents via e-mails. However, in order to help the School Board reach out as many people as they can, especially the Asian communities, we are attaching their message at the bottom of this newsletter.
