Apart from teaching the language, Chinese schools outside the borders of China also bear the responsibility of promoting and preserving Chinese culture and heritage. BVCS has always been in the belief that fun is the key to effective teaching and learning and hence we incorporate into our curriculum and activities many entertaining programs that touch upon the vibrant Chinese culture and art, such as Chinese calligraphy, folk dance, Chinese martial art, traditional Chinese music, and shadow puppet shows. This year the pandemic has challenged us to call off in-person cultural programs and the virtual classroom has rendered it difficult to engage students to hands-on cultural activities. For example, writing on a digital screen with a finger offers students less of a cultural experience than handwriting on a piece of paper with a brush or pen. In the old days, students through "handwriting" learn Chinese characters by associating their visual-graphic properties with lexical meaning. In the digital age, students use pinyin to "key in" letters, the spelling of which does not require the reproduction of the graphic properties that are deeply rooted in Chinese learning. To pull students back to the ancient art form of handwriting, this year we organized for the first time the Pencil Calligraphy Contest in an attempt to motivate students to practice during the winter break and to pause and appreciate the beauty of the written Chinese.

Although Chinese brush-calligraphy as a course in the mainstream school curriculum is no longer common, it has been revered as the supreme art form on a pedestal. Similar to someone donning beautiful garment, a person who can master the elegance of handcrafted calligraphy would leave a good impression in people's mind. Hard pen calligraphy with pencils, fountain pens, and brush-tip pens have been gaining people's recognition in recent years. Patience, observation and discipline are all indispensable and enhanced during the process of unfaltering meticulousness and concentration on manually forming a character. Everyone can write in a fair hand so long as one grasps the technique of spacing and stroking.

Fading is the leaning daylight at the mountain edge,
